Matchups: Vikings at Jaguars

Friday, November 21, 2008

Something will have to give when the Jaguars' Maurice Jones-Drew, who has 11 rushing touchdowns, butts heads with Minnesota's Kevin Williams and Pat Williams. But other than that and the Vikings' wonderful Adrian Peterson there isn't much fantasy suspense here. In fact, we expect a low-scoring game with plenty of bad receiver play.

Five-Star Players

RB Adrian Peterson, Vikings. How good is this guy? He's so good that last week's 85-yard performance against the Bucs was considered a disappointment to fantasy owners. But look for Peterson to "get back on track" against the Jaguars. Minnesota went away from Peterson for some unknown reason in the fourth quarter last week. The Vikings won't make that mistake again. That's because Jacksonville is 20th in run defense, giving up an average of 113.2 yards per game.

Three-Star Players

RB Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars. The Vikings are second in the NFL at stopping the run with an average of 73.9 yards allowed per game. But they haven't been impossible to score rushing touchdowns against as shown by the nine they've given up this season. Jones-Drew's penchant for scoring TDs makes him a must-play, but don't expect a lot of yards.

Matchups: Buccaneers at Lions

Friday, November 21, 2008

When you see only a kicker and defense listed in the five-star section, it usually means you can expect a boring fantasy matchup. But when the Lions are involved, everyone on the opposing team has a chance to be a fantasy star. That's why Warrick Dunn and Antonio Bryant go from borderline options to must-starts this week. Even Jeff Garcia has solid fantasy value -- yes, that Jeff Garcia. For the Lions, it's the usual: Calvin Johnson gets a start and you'll have to decide whether the Lions will be able to run the ball long enough to make Kevin Smith worth a start. Read on to find out what we think.

Five-Star Players

Buccaneers defense/special teams. The Bucs' D/ST should rack up points against the circus that is the Lions. Detroit has allowed 37 sacks, second most in the league, and is giving opposing defenses 11.5 fantasy ppg, fifth most. Tampa Bay is an elite option this week.

K Matt Bryant, Buccaneers. Bryant is a steady source of field goals and should get his fair share of scoring opportunities against one of the worst defenses in the world. The Lions are giving up 9.1 fppg to opposing kickers, tied for ninth most in the league.

Matchups: 49ers at Cowboys

Friday, November 21, 2008
This would have been the game of the week...in the mid-to-late 90s. Unfortunately for the 49ers, there's no Steve Young, Jerry Rice or Terrell Owens this time around. Well, there's still T.O., he just plays for the opposing team now. With Tony Romo back and the Cowboys' defense improving, this one could get ugly in a hurry for Shaun Hill and company. At least Frank Gore is doing well, even if he is no Ricky Watters.

Five-star Players

RB Frank Gore, 49ers. Gore scored two TDs and had his second-best rushing game of the season (106 yards) last week, but things will be more difficult against a Cowboys' defense that limited Clinton Portis to 68 yards in Week 11. For the season, Dallas is allowing 105.6 rushing yards a game. Gore will likely have to do some damage as a receiver, but he's only caught three passes for 14 yards in his past two games. He's still a starter, but he'll have to really work to put up RB1 stats.

QB Tony Romo, Cowboys. The most famous little pinkie in the world held up just fine last Sunday in Romo's return to the field. He looked a little rusty after missing four weeks, but he still managed 198 yards and a TD (and two INTs). Romo will be even better and more comfortable this week, especially since he's going against a pass defense that's allowing 234.9 passing yards per game. The 49ers have picked off 10 passes, so Romo will likely throw an INT or two, but his yards and touchdowns will more than make up for that. Start him with confidence.

Westbrook watch: Buckhalter will steal carries

Friday, November 21, 2008
Since we can't get enough of Brian Westbrook and his status, here's our default update of the day.

According to the Eagles' official site, backup Correll Buckhalter may see a "yeoman's share" of carries, even if Westbrook is active. Apparently a "yeoman's share" means a lot.

Head coach Andy Reid made it clear that Buckhalter will see more play time than usual:
"Correll will have an opportunity to play. We probably could have played him more last week and probably should have. That's my responsibility and he'll get a few more opportunities this week," Reid said. "He's a good football player, I think we all know that. Every time he's had an opportunity to start, he's had big days."
It appears our suspicions are accurate. Westbrook wasn't a very good play this week anyway, and now with Buckhalter getting in the mix, the Philly run game should be avoided all together.

Westbrook's likely to be listed as questionable on Friday's injury report. That shouldn't surprise anyone -- he's been on the injury report since '82.

The rumors that Westbrook will be shut down for a week are looking more realistic than ever, and it shouldn't shock anyone if he ends up being deactivated Sunday. There are better options out there, and exercise them by all means.
